figs and pears are unofficially the fruits of autumn- according to me. they are so nostalgic to me because pears are personally one of my favorite fruits and my grandmother adored figs. I put together a very simple jam-like compote to make this season. it’s absolutely delicious, bursting with fall fruits and warming spices. it also includes chia seeds and is naturally sweetened to help regulate blood sugar. top this fig, pear and blackberry chia compote on everything this season- I think you’ll love it.
the inspiration:
I wanted to create a simple jam to represent autumn and seasonal produce. Figs were the first fruit I chose, followed by pears, and I thought the sweet tartness of late summer blackberries would also be perfect. ground nutmeg and almond extract add an incredible boost to the flavor profile, too.
fig compote ingredients:
- fresh figs: the star of the show
- fresh pears & blackberries: the co-stars.
- chia seeds: help thicken the compote and add healthy fats. I like this brand.
- honey: naturally sweetens the compote.
- almond extract: don’t skip this- it adds a decadent fruit pie-like flavor. I also like adding pure vanilla extract, as well.
- mineral salt: always add salt to sweets to bring out their flavors.
- ground nutmeg: the perfect spice addition to the fall fruits.
how to make:
this compote recipe couldn’t be easier to make. You literally toss everything in a saucepan, and let it simmer for under 30 minutes. I like for some texture from the fruits to remain and the chia seeds naturally thicken the compote so beautifully. this compote will store in the fridge in an airtight jar or container for weeks. so simple.
Serving ideas:
I made this compote specifically for it’s versatility to use throughout the autumn months. here are some ideas to use it:
- spoon atop greek yogurt for a simple breakfast full of healthy fats and protein.
- add a few dollops of compote layered with my wedding cake protein smoothie for a decadent high-protein dessert.
- serve atop a block of cream cheese with crackers for an easy appetizer.
- layer in trifle dishes with my pumpkin pie spiced granola and honey-sweetened greek yogurt for the perfect addition to your entertaining table. this was at my autumn tea party and they were such a hit!
