breastfeeding is a journey in itself so why not indulge and nurture in the process? this nourishing lactation bite recipe takes one large bowl, some measuring, a big mix, some rolling and a little bit of waiting. 

I developed this recipe 2.5 years ago when I was very, very pregnant waiting for my newborn son to make his grand arrival, (10 days late). In the postpartum fog, these provided me joy, comfort and a burst of energy while enjoying with a mid morning iced coffee or my bulletproof protein latte. you deserve it, mama.

  • organic oats: high content of calcium, zinc, iron, and manganese makes them excellent for healing postpartum moms and they are as rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
  • brewer’s yeast: an excellent source of Protein, Iron, B Vitamins, and Selenium boosting energy levels and helping to combat fatigue, elevate mood and sense of well-being.
  • flaxseed: rich in omega-3 fatty acids, help promote hormone regulation, enhance milk supply, improve digestive health and boost the nutrients of breast milk.
  • nut butter: high in vitamins and minerals including niacin, magnesium, and folic acid. A plant-based protein source also yielding healthy fats and carbohydrates.
  • coconut oil: a nutrient and energy-dense fat benefitting postpartum recovery, healthy lactation, and metabolism.

These nourishing lactation balls are perfect just as is but if you want a fun spin on the classic lactation ball, mix it up with these flavor combos:

  • trail mix: omit chocolate chips for chocolate candies, add in chopped toasted almonds, pistachios and dried cranberries. 
  • cookie crunch: add in chopped chocolate cashew sandwich cookies
  • salted caramel: after forming balls, drizzle with caramel sauce and flaky sea salt. 
  • honey nut: omit chocolate chips for chopped salted peanuts.
  • chewy fruity: omit chocolate chips for chopped dried apricots, cranberries & pineapple.

Nourishing Lactation Bites

These delightful sweet & chewy chocolate oat bites contain great ingredients proven to help promote and sustain breast milk for nursing mothers. Not nursing? Sub protein powder for the brewer's yeast and you have a delicious protein bite.

Servings 2 dozen

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 2 T brewers yeast (sub protein powder to turn lactation bites into protein bites)
  • ½ cup ground flaxseed
  • ½ cup drippy all natural peanut butter crunchy or creamy
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips
  • 2 pitted dates chopped small
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 T coconut oil melted
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (don't skip)

Instructions
 

  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. Chill for 10 minutes.
  • Grease your hands and a small sheet pan with coconut oil spray.
  • Roll mixture into uniform tablespoon-sized balls with a cookie scoop and transfer to the greased sheet pan.
  • Freeze for 10 mins until set then transfer to a storage container and freeze until ready to enjoy.
  • Let bites defrost 5 min before enjoying. I usually defrosted two for a serving.
